IMPACT NIGHT!

After last Tuesday, all I can say is WOW! JESUS DID HIS THING! I am so proud of our team of leaders, students, and interns! We had over 300 student come out for SUPERCR3W from America’s Best Dance Crew, but Jesus kept them! We had performances by Nathan Jones, Stephanie Hazel and United Worship was amazing! Students were literally praising God! (you can hear it on the podcast) BUT the best news is we had 59 first time guests and 69 first time salvation’s! WOW. We have not arrived, but are excited for what GOD is going to do in 2010!

…the best news is we had 59 first time guests and 69 first time salvation’s! WOW!

Be My Valentine: Purity

What a POWERFUL night! Feel free to listen to the podcast to hear what was preached, but the most important thing we left with is purity through the Holy Spirit. We gave out a challenge to purity and took their word for it. Here is what we gave out.

Colossians 2:20 You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as,  21 “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? 22 Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them.  23 These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.

Grow or Go

I preached a fun message last week regarding the Fruits of the Spirit and Galatians 6. It was actually the second time I didn’t preach with notes but allowed God and the scripture to move me. It was a little different but I am constantly challenging myself to prepare the messenger and not the message.

This sermon is about being gentle and humble when you lead someone to Christ and if you are someone that is NOT growing in the things of God, then get out. Either you grow or GO! Listen to this message below!

Perfect Anxiety

Last night was a great night! Preached a message with the help from a counselor in regards to Galatians 3 and anxiety. Here is a few excerpts from my notes:

Galatians 2:3-5 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?

How will you be made perfect? What a powerful statement! Pastor Tom talked about success this past weekend, and stated that success is not defined by what you do, or even what you have achieved, GOD defines success, God defines Perfection! Stop worrying about becoming perfect, stop worrying about little stuff that God has already taken care of!

We KNOW the Bible and we KNOW about God but we really don’t BELIEVE!  If we really TRUSTED God we would then live a worry-free and anxiety free lifestyle! I am guilty of this as well!

Here is a powerful statement that the counselor said, “In therapy we can focus cognitively by examining thoughts that go with the anxiety and try to come up with corrective thoughts in place of the irrational ones.”WOW, It is all in the MIND. This is $200 by the hour advice your youth pastor is giving you! We can blame the devil all we want but we must first address the way we think!

In 2 Kings 7:3-20 is a powerful story about lepers, which really defines the life that we are called to live. As yourself this, “Why sit here till we die?” Why worry about everything? Why worry about death? Why worry and stress over things you cannot control or even the small things you think control YOU.
Bottom line: Train your mind: Memorize and recite the following regularly when they are anxious:

“God is who He says He is; God does what He says He will do; I am who God says that I am; I can do all things through Christ; God’s Word is alive and active in me.”(Joyce Meyer)

Motives

It is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and I am reminded of being an intern in Fayetteville, NC and we asked our boss, Evangelist Pat Schatzline, for a day off since it was MLK day. He simply said “No” because we had an upcoming trip but he looked at my friend Mike Pavlik (Being half black and half white) and said, “Mike gets a half day off” and we lost it laughing! BUT as an intern and even now as a pastor I have to check my motives….did I pray because I was told to or because I wanted to?

By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds [Lives]. 1 Corinthians 3:10

We are good at lying but you cannot get past God! We can lie about wanting to be holy or wanting to play by the rules but we often don’t. We can try out BEST to lie to God, but someday as Christians we will have to give an account for everything we did. In regards to “Building” this scripture is talking about your life. Who is building upon your foundation? The World, You, or God? Here is a great statement: “Jesus didn’t die on the cross so that you can simply pray a simple prayer then you can go and live the way you want. Jesus died on the cross so that we will become followers of Jesus, not followers of ourselves.”

Here are 5 questions that Perry Noble gives to help us examine our motives: [modified by me]

1. Why are you at United Student Ministries? What is your motivation for coming? Do you come for some girl or guy to pursue a dating relationship? Do you come for the delicious pizza? (I don’t blame you either) or do you come to experience God and help others to experience Him?

2. Am I seeking to obey Jesus or negotiating with Him? What is the motive for your prayers and actions? God doesn’t care if you are good. God will tell you to stop doing something, but we often say, I won’t stop doing that (Purity) but I will read my Bible more

3. Am I looking at God’s Word as a command or as a suggestion? God never asks anyone to do anyone, He commands. Think about it. Do you read the Word and say. “That isn’t for me.” or do you read the Word and think “Man! I really should be doing that, eh, another time”?

4. Am I living in sin with no sorrow or no desire to get out of it? Is there something in your life that is sinful and you are not sorry for it? Then you probably don’t know Jesus, because the Holy Spirit will convict us. Can we call sin sin?

“Not carrying the one in a math problem is a mistake, having an affair is not a mistake it is a SIN”

5. Am I giving God my very best? Can you honestly stand before God and say I gave my very best? I am not looking for perfect people but I am looking for people that will give God their BEST instead of their LEFT OVERS?

I am challenged to check my motives, not just in compromise to sin, but to everything I do. What is my motive for getting students in every week to United? Salvation or Numbers? What is my motive for working as much as I do? Advance the Kingdom or look good? Go ahead – look over these 5 questions and challenge your motives today. If you need some checking, you can start tonight at Monday Night Prayer @ 7pm.

Abandon Mediocrity!

I spoke last Tuesday and I actually took a quick break from our current series entitled “The United Stand” because God interrupted my series for an outreach message called “Abandon Mediocrity” based upon 1 Kings 19. Elisha was just plowing the field, day in and day out, living a mediocre life. The church often lives an average life, getting up, barely getting by, and attending church without an impact. You are BORED with your relationship with God because you haven’t been applying the word of God to your life! But along came what I call an interruption from God through a prophet. Elijah simply saw something in Elisha that Elisha didn’t see. That is what we are called to do!

I am going to preach on PERSONAL OUTREACH until I see BORING ATTTENDACE go to EXCITING SALVATIONS!

Jude 1:23 “Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment.” In the Greek it means to SAVE THEM FAST! What are you waiting for? Abandon Average! Rescue your friends from HELL! Rescue them from AVERAGE!

This is my challenge. This week tell a complete stranger about Jesus. I am not necessarily asking you to witness or be weird about it. But simple bring up Jesus in conversation this week and see what God does.
